Cataloging Concepts for Non-Catalogers

Registration is now available for a one-day class at the Leesburg Library on May 28, 2014 introducing "Cataloging Concepts for Non-Catalogers."

 

At the end of the session, attendees should have a better understanding of what cataloging is, cataloging standards, and how those standards create the OPAC record. They should be able to look at an OPAC record and understand how it got there, better understand search results, know a little cataloging jargon, and to be able to troubleshoot issues with search retrieval and bibliographic records.

Web-Based Staff Client for Evergreen

PINES, in cooperation with a group of other Evergreen systems throughout the country, is currently in negotiations with Equinox Software, Inc. to fund the complete development of a new, web-based version of the Evergreen Staff Client. As you may have heard us mention in previous discussions, the current staff client makes heavy use of Mozilla's xulrunner technology.

NoveList Select Subscription

GPLS and PINES are pleased to announce that we will move forward with our subscription to NoveList Select on behalf of all public libraries. See the NoveList press release below.  Our subscription will begin on July 1, 2014.  Chris Sharp, PINES System Administrator, will work with all libraries to facilitate the implementation of this resource.  PINES libraries will not need to do anything.  We will be in touch with all others to get contact information for how to implement this in your catalogs.

 

 

PINES Planned Downtime for March 11

The PINES System Administration team will be performing system maintenance on Tuesday, March 11 at 9:00 p.m. This should not take more than a few hours.

 

We will be applying a couple of patches to Evergreen:

1) A patch that fixes staff members' current ability to edit their own library accounts (this is disallowed in PINES policy).

2) A patch that speeds the processing of hold requests.

 

If you encounter any problems, please enter a Help Desk ticket.

Holds White Paper

PINES holds have proven to be challenging to administer because of the size of the consortium, the geographic area covered by it, the sheer number of items that move about the state, and the system processes that control holds. As the PINES community gained experience with the pros and cons of statewide lending, the membership developed guidelines and management solutions and directed development of software solutions to fulfill the goal of statewide lending through holds.

Two New Optional Features

The upgrade to 2.5 brought us several new features. The two that we've enabled today are the ability to use Address Alerts and the ability to link library holdings in the OPAC to the library's web page for address/contact information. These are optional features, so each library system's Director will determine whether or not to implement them and the system's Local Admin will configure them. More information and instructions at:
