Receipt Printer Setup

Printer Models

Most models of receipt printers that will work with your model of computer and operating system will work with Evergreen, and PINES staff do not recommend or endorse any particular one of them.

The Epson TM-T88IV printer was very popular amongst PINES libraries, but it has been discontinued. If you attempt to order the Epson TM-T88V model, be aware that it comes in many configurations, most of which are designed to interface with point of sale systems or kiosks and not with standard computers. The manufacturer number of the correct configuration is: Mfg# C31CA85084. The standard USB A to USB B printer cable is sold separately.

Installation

Installing and configuring receipt printers requires several steps:

  1. Connect the printer and install the printer driver
  2. Configure the Evergreen-specific settings for the printer
  3. Configure the default printer settings for the new printer

The following instructions are written for Windows 7, but should be similar for most systems. If you are setting up an old dot-matrix printer, you may need to use the Alternate Settings.

To modify what prints out on the receipts themselves, see Receipt Templates.

1. Connect the printer and install the printer driver

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for connecting the computer and installing the appropriate driver. If the driver is not readily available on CD, download it.

Note: If the workstation can print to both a receipt printer and a laser printer, the laser printer should be set as the Default printer both in the Windows printer settings and in the Evergreen printer settings. The receipt printer should be set with the Receipt printer settings in Evergreen. If you do this and one of your receipt types prints on the wrong printer, you may use the 'Force Printer Context' settings in the Receipt Template Editor for that particular receipt type.

2. Configure the Evergreen-specific settings for the printer

  1. Log into Evergreen and go to Admin > Workstation Administration > Printer Settings Editor.
  2. In the Printer Context section, select Receipt.
  3. Click Page Settings. This will open a pop-up window with two tabs.
  4. On the Format & Options tab, the Orientation should be set to Portrait and the Scale should be set to 100%. Uncheck the 'Shrink to Page Width' box.
  5. On the Margins & Header/Footer tab, set all margins to 0.0. All of the Headers & Footers dropdowns should be set to '--blank--'.
  6. Click OK.
  7. In the Printer Context section, select Offline.
  8. Repeat steps 3-6.

3. Configure the default printer settings for the new printer

  1. In the Printer Context section, select Receipt.
  2. Click Set Default Printer and Print Test Page. This will open the standard Windows Print dialog box.
  3. Select the receipt printer from the dropdown list.
  4. Click Properties.
  5. Find the settings for Paper Size (this may be under Advanced - the location may vary slightly based on the printer driver you have installed and the version of Windows you have installed).
  6. Choose the correct paper size for your printer (it should be something along the lines of "70mm x Roll" or "Continuous Feed").
  7. Click OK to close the pop-up window(s) and view the test page that prints out.
  8. In the Printer Context section, select Offline.
  9. Repeat steps 2-8.
  10. If you will use this workstation to print to any other printer, such as a normal laser printer or a label printer, then select the appropriate option in the Printer Context section ("Default" for the normal laser printer, "Label" for a label printer) and repeat steps 2-8 to select your appropriate paper size and print a test page.

Alternate Settings for Dot-Matrix Printers

If the previous instructions will not work for your receipt printer (usually, if you are using an older dot-matrix printer), you may need to use slightly different settings and it may take a bit of experimentation to get it to work properly.

  1. Connect the printer and install the printer driver from the manufacturer.
  2. In the Printer Context section, select Receipt.
  3. Click Use Alternate Print Strategy (DOS LPT1 Print).
  4. Follow steps 2 (Configure the Evergreen-specific settings for the printer) and 3 (Configure the default printer settings) above.
